Do I Really Need a Marketing Agency or Can I Do It Myself?

Plenty of contractors can do their own marketing! For a while anyway. If you’ve got the time to post consistently, learn the basics of SEO, keep your Google Business Profile updated, and stay on top of it week after week, DIY marketing is possible. The question isn’t really “can I do this myself,” it’s “is this the highest use of my time right now.”

DIY makes sense when:

  • You’re just starting out and cash flow is tight
  • You genuinely enjoy content creation and have time to spare
  • Your business is small enough that referrals still cover most of your workload

Hiring help makes sense when:

  • You’re booked out, but the leads coming in are inconsistent month to month
  • You’ve tried posting/updating your site and it’s fallen to the bottom of your to-do list every single week
  • You’re losing bids to competitors who clearly have a stronger online presence
  • You want to grow past what referrals alone can support

The honest tradeoff most contractors run into is this: marketing takes consistency to work, and consistency takes time. That time is usually already spoken for by the actual job…

A lot of the contractors we work with at EJ Studios didn’t fail at DIY marketing because they didn’t understand it. They failed because they ran out of hours in the week to keep it up. That’s the real decision point — not whether you’re capable, but whether it’s worth your time versus paying someone to handle it while you run the business.
