Why Am I Spending Thousands on Marketing with Zero Results?
If you’ve dropped thousands of dollars into ads, a website, maybe a logo redesign, and the phone still isn’t ringing — you’re not alone, and you’re probably not doing anything “wrong” in the way you think you are. Most contractors who feel like their marketing is a black hole have one thing in common: they’re spending money on visibility without a strategy behind it.
Here’s what that usually looks like in practice. You run some Facebook ads because someone told you to. You get a nice-looking website because your competitor has one. You throw a few hundred dollars a month at boosted posts. None of it is connected to anything else, none of it is tracked, and none of it is built around what your actual customers are searching for when they’re ready to hire.
The real problem is usually one (or more) of these:
- No clear customer journey. A lead sees an ad, lands on a generic homepage, and has no obvious next step. Confused visitors don’t call.
- Wrong keywords, wrong audience. Ranking for “contractor” doesn’t get you jobs. Ranking for “licensed roofing contractor Salem Oregon free estimate” does.
- No follow-up system. Leads come in and sit in a text thread for three days. By then, they’ve hired someone else.
- Nothing being tracked. If you can’t tell which channel brought in your last five jobs, you can’t tell what to keep funding and what to cut.
Marketing that works for contractors isn’t about spending more — it’s about spending on the right things, in the right order, with a way to measure what’s actually converting into booked jobs. At EJ Studios, we start every new contractor client with a visibility audit before we ever touch a budget, because throwing more money at a broken system just gets you a bigger hole. If you’re in Salem or the Willamette Valley and want a second opinion on where your marketing dollars have actually been going, that audit is free.
